Thoughts on working in new construction homes
My thoughts on new construction project sites
Below I will list the pros and cons IMO of working on new construction projects. This will have to do with mostly tile installation projects in residential homes. But will give you a general idea. I have mostly worked on residential homes and some commercial jobs sites with tile installations
Pros :
You can work on multiple areas of the home a the same time. Start to set tile on the master bathroom floor and also the guest bathroom walls.
Most times no one is living in the home at the time of construction. This can give you free reign of things on site.
Some sometimes there is no other trade on site
You can setup you’r cutting and mixing area close to the areas you are working.
You may be able to start your day and end your day on site earlier or later depending on location.
Usually you do not have to clean up the work areas perfectly every day. You can drop your tools at the end of the day and resume the following day.
Cons:
1. You are in mud.
2. No heat or A/C
3. Kind of a odd feeling with no one there beside you or your crew.
4. Could be working over other trade beside being the Tile contractor.
5. Working on a muddy job site. The mud tends to get tracked in and end up on the floor, which is NOT good for Setting Tile !
6. No bathroom, maybe portable toilet.
7. Some new construction can be just lower end work in every aspect.
8. May have limited or no parking.
9. Not all builders will pay a premium for premium work.
10. Some builder will not pay anything until all work in done.
11. Some builders you have to chase to get the payment.
12. If there is power on site. It may be only one outlet next to the electrical panel.
13. Might not be able to lock up home to keep tools safe.
14. Some times there can be very tight time lines.
